Year 1

Wear your Spots, Let’s Raise Lots!

Year one have worked incredibly hard again this week.

In Literacy, the children have edited and improved a poem about a plane. With their learning partners the children thought of synonyms to make their writing more interesting and added in some adjectives to describe how the plane travels. We have also developed our reading comprehension skills this week. The children enjoyed reading our model text ‘The Red Racing Car’ and were able to answer lots of questions about the text.

In Maths we have been comparing numbers and using our adding skills to help us solve simple word problems. The children have improved their number formation this week and have lots of fun using concrete resources in lessons. We have now moved on to using two ten frames to show bigger numbers!

In Phonics we have learnt the ‘are’ sound. The children impressed me with how quickly they thought of words containing this sound. Homework will provide further practice with this. Remember ‘Care and Share’!

In our Context for Learning sessions we had lots of fun learning about old forms of transport. The children were able to sort words and pictures into two sections ‘Past’ and ‘Present’.

In our Collective Worship sessions we have been thinking about why we celebrate Remembrance Day. The children created some beautiful poppies for the whole school remembrance service which took place outside on the playground. It was wonderful to hear the mini choir sing We Will Remember. Thank you to everyone who brought in poppies from home.

On Friday we all wore our spots and raised lots of money for Children in Need. In Year 1 the children wrote fantastic acrostic poems about SPOTS, completed some Children in Need themed addition number sentences and enjoyed designing a costume for Pudsey Bear.

Have a happy weekend.
