Getting to know you:
This week in Year 6…
Welcome to Y6. I am sure everyone is very pleased to be back at school after the long summer holiday. To ease everyone in the children have only been in for 4 days (they will be pleased to know that the staff had to do the whole 5 days!) We have however managed to pack quite a lot in to our shortened week. Lots of getting to know you activities and a few baseline assessments.
During our Maths sessions this week we have focused on quick-fire activities and times tables. In addition to this we have also completed a athematic and reasoning assessment (from a set of three past KS2 SATs papers) paper 3 will be completed early next week – once these have been assessed we will use the results to highlight gaps in our knowledge – We will then and use this information to guide our planning for this half term.
We have been very busy during our English sessions this week: We have drafted, up-levelled and written a neat copy of a letter (with a twist) to Mrs Cowley with information about ourselves. The twist being we wrote our letters in the role of one of our parents or siblings. The children have also written and word processed a poem about themselves – this time they were allowed to write as themselves. Finally the children were asked to write a prayer linked to one of our Christian values to be placed in our reflection area. All of these written activities have been tackled with enthusiasm and have been a pleasure to read.
To accompany our poems the children have drawn a self-portrait in an abstract style. They are very colourful and will make a really lovely welcoming display in the classroom.
We have also spent time getting to know the routines and expectations that come with Y6 – including the added responsibilities of being the oldest children in the school. These include supporting both the staff and other children by doing various helpful jobs around the school. They have absolutely taken these expectations on board – I know we are going to have a fantastic year.
