Alien or Real?

Year 1 enjoyed a day out to Beeston castle. Children travelled back in time to discover who built Beeston Castle and why they chose this location, looking for evidence in the remains of the castle to help explore key events in the past. Role play, costume and object handling helped bring the history of the castle to life, as they learnt about what life was like in a medieval castle and how the site has changed over time. The children listened attentively and asked lots of interesting questions. They enjoyed labelling and designing their own castles! We were all very pleased with the children’s behaviour on our class trip and our tour guide couldn’t thank the children enough for their enthusiasm during the history lesson. Well done year 1!

In Literacy, we have been using drama to show what words mean then using the words in our sentence work. The children have been using the following words:trapped, riches, castle, brave, curse and cackle. Next week we will be discussing good and bad characters from a variety of well known fairy Tales and writing character descriptions using adjectives.

The children have continued to work very hard in their Read, write, Inc lessons and are making lots of progress with their phonics. We have been playing lots of games to help us quickly recognise  real and alien words. Miss Bryan is assessing the children regularly to check which sounds need more practise. We have sent a phonics pack home with the children today. (These will be placed inside their homework books). We will continue to send home new flash cards and test papers over the new few months for you to practise with at home.  School will administer the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check the week beginning Monday 8 June 2020. If you have any questions about the Phonics Screening check, please do not hesitate to come and see me.

In Maths we have been using arrow cards to show two -digit numbers. The children have enjoyed the practical games linked to place value this week.

In RE we listened to the parable of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31-32) and we discussed the Kingdom of God. The children thought about who is important to them in their lives and described what their kingdom would look like if they were a king or queen. Over the next two weeks the children will be planting seeds and monitoring their growth which links to our Science topic ‘Plants’.
