Halkyn – Year 2

Welcome to Year 2. A special milestone in your child’s education at GP

As Your Child Is Taking The Journey Through Key Stage One, They Acquire The Skills Required For Transition Into Key Stage Two.

This year is an important stage in your child’s education. Due to the closure of schools, Year 2 will take the Key Stage One SATs assessments in Spring term.

We offer a child centered approach this enables children to flourish and reach their full potential. Preparing your child academically, emotionally, and spiritually for life in an ever-changing world. As our children will take assessments this year, we will offer a well-balanced curriculum and will endeavour to bridge any gaps from Year 1.

Morning Challenge – Each day starts with a valuable morning challenge specifically designed to consolidate and extend your child’s learning, whilst encourage peer interaction. This time also allows children to access for pastoral time and targeted academic interventions and daily reads, this enables your child eases into their morning purposefully and are ready to access their lessons with positivity.

Phonics, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar – Building on the knowledge learnt in Year 1 in Phonics the children will able split into ability phonic sessions. This is to ensure that your child is secure with sounds before moving on. These sessions are designed to empower your child with a broad understanding and skill set, which supports the development of their independent reading and writing key skills when accessing Key Stage One SATS.

Mathematics – Embedding a sound understanding of Place Value with real-life application of arithmetic skills and reasoning, maths is taught using First 4 Maths. Your child will become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, in line with the National Curriculum Y2 expectations, whilst developing conceptual understanding and reasoning in inquiry based, practical lessons.

Literacy –  Lessons reflect the importance of vocabulary, we will broaden spoken and written language in your child’s development across the whole curriculum, enhancing their cognitive, social, and linguistic development. Exploring a multitude of genres before internalising key features of these text types, through drama and practical activities.

Religious Education – Taught through key questions, this is following the Chester Diocesan planning. Year Two will start with: How does the Bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better inside or outside?

As historians – Year 2 will investigate The Great Fire of London, making History come to life with a final re-enactment of how fire spreads so fast.
